Field Variations - v1.4.6

Variations allow you to easily manage translations and jurisdictional information within Fundipedia.

Managing Variations

To manage your variations, navigate to the admin configuration page, by clicking on the admin icon in the top header, then the admin configuration in the left-hand panel, from here click view on the variation panel on the screen.

There are three variation categories in Fundipedia: country, currency and language. These variations all share the same behaviour and are split to allow you more control over how your data is organised, for example, Investment Object could vary by language while Registrations could vary by country.

Variations are typically configured by Atlas during your initial setup. Each variation is given:

  1. Schema - This is used by the database to store the additional values.
  2. Prefix - This is to make sure that the column names are unique in the database, for that reason prefixes used by variations are not available for use on fields.
  3. Suffix - This is used in the Fundipedia display name to ensure that the display names are unique when reporting.
  4. Code - This is used as a short reference when editing records.
  5. Alt Code - This is optionally used by reporting standards; more detail is provided later.
  6. Name - This is used as a long reference when editing records.
  7. Active - This allows for variations to be reserved by Fundipedia without initially storing information, it is also possible to include these on reports with default values, for cases where jurisdictional information is needed on a report but not stored.

It is possible to add or activate variations at any time, but they cannot be deleted or deactivated. Fields that have already been tagged as a variation will have the extra information added to them when the new variation becomes available. Schema and Prefix need to be unique across all three categories and cannot be changed after the variation has been saved. All other information can be altered after saving. For currency and language variation codes, drop downs are provided. Once you are satisfied with your changes, click save. Only one category can be updated at a time.

Marking fields as variations

Fields can only be marked as a variation when they are initially created. When creating a field simply select the desired variation category from the drop down and Fundipedia will create the additional fields and link them together.

For users to interact with variation fields, permission needs to be given. Variations are treated separately for permission purposes allowing you granular control over the information. See assigning permissions for a new field to learn how to assign permissions.

Viewing variations

When viewing records in Fundipedia, if a layout includes one of the variation categories there will be a marker at the top to indicate that there are multiple variations available. To switch, simply pick the variation from the drop down on at the top of the page, or the variation field.

It is also possible to view all the variation information at the same time, by default; this view can be switched on from the settings section in the admin area

When showing all variations there will be a link to edit all, this will open a dialog where data can be entered. Only variations that have a value will be displayed.

Change events

Special behaviour has been given to variation fields and change events. You can add change events to all variants of a field at the same time, if one of the fields you use is also a variation then the variants will match up. This field selector shows a change event being added to all variations the red box on the left shows the individual variations, these will not cause the variations to match up, box 2 shows the grouped variation of the same field that will cause variations to match up.

This means if your Umbrella Name and Fund Name are both language variant fields, you can add a single change event to all Fund Names, and they will use the correct variant of Umbrella Name.

Fund Name (English) will be populated by Umbrella Name (English)
Fund Name (Spanish) will be populated by Umbrella Name (Spanish)
Fund Name (Korean) will be populated by Umbrella Name (Korean)

In some cases, such as registrations, their may be exceptions to the rule. In these cases, you can navigate to the variant using the drop down on the change event information, change it separately from the rest, then lock it so that it is not updated if tweaks are made to other variants.

Once a variant has been locked it can be seen from the admin schema by navigating to the field and clicking the variation link next to change events. This shows a brief summary of all variants that have been locked.

Reporting standards

Variations in Fundipedia use the variation suffix to ensure that their display names are unique, however we know that not every reporting standard is going to use the same suffix. For this reason when you are adding a new column header you can choose to use the suffix, display name, code or alt code as a suffix. For more information about creating reporting standards, please visit the using reporting standards page.

This means adding the reporting standard to a variation field will add the same columns for all variants using the chosen suffix.

On reports the chosen suffix is appended to the appropriate column.

Like permissions and change events, reporting standards can also be fine tuned for variations. When editing a field, click the variations link next to the reporting standards header to be taken to the management screen.

Check the variations that should display a value when using this reporting standard and uncheck those that are not valid. Like normal fields variants that do not have the reporting standard will show "Not configured for this standard" when used on reports. Once configured, click save to confirm the changes.

Combined and inactive variations

Combined and inactive variations are only used for reporting purposes. The access points for these report only fields are found in the system access points.

Users with access to the combined and inactive options will get addition fields on the selector in reports.

When using variations in reports there is also the option to use the same "View All" option from Fundipedia. This is called the "Combined" variation, which will build a concatenation of all active variations into a single column.

Inactive field values are set on the field in the schema. The primary purpose for inactive variations is to add data into a report that you do not store but are required to include.
